2020 NWSSA Virtual Symposium

2020 NWSSA Virtual Symposium We're Taking the Symposium Virtual This Year!

For the week of August 5-9th, 2020, NWSSA has set up a private online forum where we can share videos, pictures, have Q&A discussions, watch live presentations, order tools and t-shirts, and much more.

We encourage you to take those days off from work and spend as much time carving as you can, like you would at Camp. Get on the forum during breaks and mealtimes and randomly throughout the day; spend the evenings chatting away with stoner buddies over private messages, discussions, video, or even the phone. The forum is mostly text based with some video supplements so don’t worry about getting Zoom-exhaustion!

You are invited to share video tours of your home studios and pictures of what you’re working on – take the video ahead of time with your phone and so long as you can get it up on YouTube or Vimeo or anywhere we can link to, then you can share it. You can join in for live presentations (or watch them later) by Tracey Powell, Matt Auvinen, Michael E. Yeaman, Tamara Buchanan, Stephanie Robison, Deborah Wilson and others, and watch a video series by Renee of public sculpture works of our members. If you have an idea for a presentation, just let Cyra know and she’ll get you on the schedule. You will want to download Zoom ahead of time and create and account (and try it out a few times with friends) before the 5th.

You can ask questions about tools and techniques or work out issues you’re having with a particular stone. You can strike up private conversations with other carvers and join social Zoom calls in the evenings – perhaps even with multiple campfires!

We’re doing this to bring a sense of togetherness during this time of separation and distance. We all miss each other, and we are missing Stone Camp. Let’s make the most of this and take the week to encourage and inspire each other as only we can!

The minimal cost is to cover software, admin fees, and to bolster the NWSSA general fund to cover our yearly costs like book-keeping, insurance, and printing that are usually paid for by symposium fees. If you can’t afford the $50 registration fee, please email Cyra at sirenicity @ gmail and she’ll set you up.

Please use the PayPal registration and watch for an email from the forum on the evening of August 4th with instructions on how to sign in. The forum is easy to navigate and use and we can’t wait to see your shining faces.
